February Critique

My concentration is the damages and distortion the elements have on trees. For this time around I tried to focus on the leaf from a tree. The first one I really worked on my layering. I water colored the trunk of a tree and then on top distorted the surface so the tree was just barely showing through. On one of my last layers I added in a leaf with black colored pencil but then it didn't really turn out well so i took some of it out. My second piece I took a closer look at a leaf and produced a zoomed in version. It is frustrating because I feel like I am at a road block. I'm not really sure where to go at this point. Mrs. McBride suggested possibly going to a paper mill and so I think I am definitely going to check that out soon. If you have any more advice for me please let me know.

MEGAN RAINBOW BRIGHT :) !!! !!!!!!!! said...

megan! these pieces are so different from what you've done.. i feel like your style has really changed! now you're starting to get away from tree trunks and bark and starting to think of the other aspects of trees like leaves. the color in the leaf one really makes it pop, and i can't really tell what's going on in the second one because the picture is small but something about being on fire..? cool idea. maybe you could think about what lives in trees? like birds and squirrels :) or maybe acorns?

First piece (leaf): The color choice for the leaf is really cool. I think the brightness and all the smaller details you put into it make it look even better. I think that, for the background, maybe you could put something more with that. In your second piece you have a lot of layering, so you could transfer some of that to the background and help create a thick foreground, which would look really cool.
Second piece (tree): The different colors you use in this is really interesting. The black and white contrast mixed with the brightness of the watercolor from the tree trunk is great. I like the layering you used, and I especially liked the red/orange/yellow mark towards the left of the tree trunk.
